From time to time we will offer vintage and used fly fishing tackle. Please check back often for new additions. We are always interested in purchasing or taking consignments of used cane rods, but visitors please take note: we do not provide free tackle appraisals! Because the value of any fishing collectible is largely based on condition, and because researching values is so time consuming, we can not offer free, sight-unseen tackle appraisals. If you'd like us to appraise your tackle for a fee, please contact us for more information and we'd be happy to assist you. If you've arrived here via a search engine because you've found an old piece of tackle and hope to learn its value, we are very sorry but we are unable to help you without seeing the tackle and charging a fee. Thanks!
Additional Note: All items are covered by our 3-day return policy. The customer can inspect or lawn cast any item for up to 3 days after receipt. If you receive an item and wish to return it, you will receive a full refund for the item provided it's returned promptly in the condition it was sent. All returned items must be insured for the purchase price and packed appropriately. Please contact us before returning any item.
We keep our consignment rates low to help you save money. The single best way for you to decide on an item is to send us a check for it and inspect it yourself. We do everything possible to describe items fairly...it does us no good to send you an item that you will only want to return. Let us know if we can provide additional pictures or if you'd like to make an offer via email.

Payne Model 104? 8.5', 2p, 2t 4.5 oz. Factory Restored. Oxidized NS impressed "Payne, Reg. US Pat. Off." D/L C&R seat over walnut spacer, brown C/P wraps tipped black, with red and yellow tipping at hook keeper and ferrules, cleaned 5 1/2" cigar grip with some ridging, one tip down 4.5" w/overwrap from last guide to tip top. Typical wear on C/R bluing of a rod this age, ferrule bluing 90% thanks to the restoration. Tight and straight.
The consigner has provided records that indicate this rod was sent to Payne in 1976 for restoration that included revarnishing and making a new full-length tip to a heavier specification than the model 104 taper. The rod with the full-length tip casts like a dream with a Grey's DT5 line, working easily from just a couple feet of line and out, and with a gentle single haul launched all the line at my feet yet still retaining plenty of reserve power. The short tip, unexpectedly, also cast the same DT5 quite well. I wouldn't characterize the rod as fast, more of a medium progressive action with a lot of backbone which would be perfect on bigger water with a DT5 or WF6 line. Bag and case replacements. $1,495
J.D. Wagner Signature Series Quad Custom 7'3" 4-5 wt, 2p, 2t. : D/L NS C&R, figured walnut spacer, 6" cigar grip formed to 4 sides at winding check, oxidized square winding check, deeply flamed cane, bright NS step down ferrules drawn and squared as appropriate for a quad, color preserved red wraps tipped gold.
This rod features a D/L NS cap and ring seat, fully engraved with 8 classic trout flies on the cap and ring and an engraved angler on the butt cap, with the initals of the original owner on a streamside rock. This is a slightly faster taper than our usual 7'3" 4-5 taper, resulting in more backbone for a faster casting stroke and larger fish. New, with engraving apx $2,795. This one, mint unused: $1,950
Wright and McGill era Granger Special 9050, 9' 3p, 2t for DT6 line. 5 oz. Pumpkin color cane, 3x3 node spacing, CP lime green silk, patented U/L full NS screw lock seat, man-sized half-Wells grip, NS ferrules w/witness marks, original bag and case.
Original pumpkin varnish is in good condition and is not soft, no bag marks. Tips full length, but one with an overwrap 1.5" long centered 2.5" from tip, butt ferrule on mid has been reset and rewrapped with non-matching thread and some bleed thru of CP, butt stripping guide wraps a little dry and could use a touch up. Grip soiling, but sections are quite straight for age and fit nicely. $275
R.L Winston 7' 2p 2t 7' for DT 4 line, 2 5/8 oz. Serial number 7850. A beautiful, short, light line rod with a lovely medium demeanor for DT4 made by Stoner and Merrick during the San Fransisco era at Winston. (3/15/1956). D/L aluminum ring and hooded cap w/mortised cork insert terminating in bakelight cap, typical Winston wraps tipped red, Duronze ferrules, nickel silver winding check, Mildrum stripper. One tip 3" short, second full length, w/slight fishing sets, varnish good but could use a good clean and polish. Original bag and case. $1,425
H.L. Leonard Allagash 7' 4p, 2t for DT4 line, serial number 1399. Leonard blond cane, 3x3 node spacing, Chinese red C/P wraps tipped gold at ferrules, Perfection snakes and Mildrum stripper, 5" cigar grip terminating in NS C/R seat with butternut spacer. Ferrules sizes 15, 11, and 8, each section is only 21 1/2" long!
Perhaps the rarest Leonard rod configuration ever made! Only 12 Allagash rods are thought to exist, most of which were made as 8' rods. In extremely fine, original condition w/original bag and labeled tube with HLL engraved brass cap. Rod posseses a very soft and lovely casting demeanor. The ultimate prize for the hard-core Leonard afficianado. $7,500.
Everette Garrison 206 7 1/2' 2p 2t for DT4 line, serial number E-79-3 (1935): Pumpkin color cane/varnish w/typical Garrison spiral node spacing pattern w/mirror matched tips, Halstead size 13 step down ferrules, Perfection stripper, guides and tip tops, transluscent silk at guides w/chocolate brown at ferrules. Expertly refinished, retaining all appropriate markings. Bag is a replacement, but tube and cap are original. One tip has a very short (1/2") clear overwrap just below the tip top wrap), otherwise sections are full length and straight, 6 1/2" Garrison grip exhibits ridging typical of a rod of this vintage, d/L NS pocketed butt cap and slide band.
What can be said of a Garrison that hasn't already been said thousands of times before? Simply the most desireable rodmaker in history and with a limited production of about 650 rods, this is one of a relative few extant in an extremely desireable length and line weight. Built only two years into his vocation as a rodmaker, this is also a very early example, and demonstrates his almost immediate mastery of the art. $11,000.
J.D. Wagner Signature Series Model 265C 6'5" 2p. 2t. 3-4 Wt. Serial no. 607-2: Dark flamed cane with golden nodes, standard translucent silk wraps finely tipped black, D/L oxidized C&R NS seat w/a very highly figured varnished amboena burl spacer, cigar grip, oxidized ferrules, agate stripper, winding check and sterling silver hook keeper, black guides.
In near-mint condition, the only sign this rod has ever been fished is slight marring in the bluing of the seat and spacer, otherwise the rod case is still packaged in the original plastic wrap it was shipped in! This version is a longer and lighter version of our 6'3" 3-4 wt, and has an action felt into the butt and fine tips. The 'C' in this taper designation was given after my wife Casimira- short and sweet. $1,650
Thomas and Thomas Individualist Custom 5'9" 2p 2t for #4 line, serial number 2256: Varnished light colored cane w/full, closely-spaced intermediates in C/P forest green silk, Perfection guides and agate stripper in NS frame, diminutive 5" cigar grip terminating in mortised cork skeleton reel seat with NS C/R, oxidized Super Z style ferrules, diminutive swelled butt.
An extremely rare, early and important custom T&T rod, inked in the precise script of Tom Maxwell, signed 'Limestone Bob' along with initials "TED" and "TLM" (Tom Dorsey and Tom Maxwell). Has a very nice, gentle action reminicient of a Hardy Marvell. Rod is straight and tight, varnish in good condition considering age and early T&T origins. Original bag and case. $3,400
Gary Lacey Wright and McGill Granger Favorite 8', 3p, 2t for DT5 line: Granger colored cane w/3 x 3 node spacing, d/l full NS slide band and soldered hood impressed with rod company ID, b&w variagated CP jasper wraps tipped gold, full internediates in gold w/gold and jasper signature wraps, NS step down ferrules w/witness marks, 6 1/2" Granger style grip.
Every last detail has been attended to in this tribute to the classic Granger rods of the past, from the use of original taper, cane color and proper silks, right down to the shape of the ferrule welts...not one minute detail has been missed, a tribute tour de force! Rod posseses a crisp dry fly action for DT5 line, and save for some case and label wear appears never fished and in as-new condition. $1,625 SALE PENDING
R.K. Bolt 8 2p 2t for DT5, 3 7/8 oz. Caramel color cane, 3 x 3 node spacing, 6 Western grip over U/L aluminum screw lock seat w/varnished zebrawood insert impressed with makers stamp, chocolate CP silks double wrapped and tipped yellow, Mildrum stripper and chrome guides, NS ferrules, winding check and hook keeper.
From noted rodmaker and Gary Howells protégé comes this delightful hollow built 8 5 wt. weighing in at just 3 7/8 oz. Rod has a very soft and easy action, bending well into the butt, and could cast a 4 along with the rated 5. Rod is in as-new condition and appears to have never been fished. Original bag and labeled case, save yourself substantial money and a 2 year wait! As new, $1,800. REDUCED 1,545!
Thomas and Thomas Classic 8' 2p 2t for DT5 line, serial number 3994. Impregnated. Medium flamed cane, 3 x 3 node spacing. Perfection guides and Mildrum stripper wrapped in off white translucent silk tipped cinnamon, dark brown silks at ferrules, 6" Western grip terminating in blued hexagonal winding check w/hook keeper above, U/L NS screw lock with varnished walnut spacer, oxidized NS ferrules. According to T&T, this rod was made by Tom Dorsey and Bob Taylor in July, 1983.
Tight and straight in overall VGC+ this rod has a strong dry-fly action. Orignal labeled bag and case. $1,875

Gorgeously mottled flamed cane, U/L NS screw lock w/figured and varnished claro walnut spacer, reverse half Wells, short detachable fighting butt w/protective end cap when not in use, fighting butt cleverely stored in distal end of rod tube, clear wraps tipped cinnamon over chrome guides. Although this rod has clearly been used it remains straight and tight and in VGC overall. Has a very strong, progressive taper making it suitable for steelhead and salmon. Gorgeous, as usual, from T&T. Original labeled bag and brass capped tube. New from T&T salmon rods run $3,850. This one, $2,425.
J. D. Wagner Model 250BC Light Baitcasting Rod: Custom made for the owner of the rod above to fish for crappies and small bass. This 5', 2p, 2t. light action rod features all the bells and whistles of our Signature Series rods plus more: mirror matched tips, richly flamed cane, wraps delicately tipped in black, agate tip tops, black titanium guides, downlocking nickel silver Venerri reel seat witha mind blowing burl wood impregnated spacer terminating in the retaining hood under the 5" grip, 'onion foregrip', nickel silver end plate on grip, oxidized super Z ferrules, bamboo ferrule plug., hexagonal curly cherry rod case with contrasting maple end caps. Rod and case evidences no signs of use and are in absolutely pristine condition. Over the years we've made less than 5 baitcasting rods, including one I made for my dad's retirement gift which remains in our family. I love making baitcasters and spinning rods for folks, but there's actually more work in one than a fly rod, hence if we quoted this rod today it would run $2,395. This one, in as-new condition, $1,595.
Leonard Model 39H: 7 1/2', 2p. 2t. for DT5/DT6 line. This 39H is in near-immaculate condition featuring blond cane w/Leonard 3x3 node spacing, polished aluminum U/L screw lock seat w/varnished mahogany spacer terminating in a 6" reverse half Wells grip, brown wraps tipped gold at ferrules and hook keeper, tan wraps tipped claret at guides, hard chrome guides with aluminum oxide ring stripper in matching brown color, Leonard step down ferrules, size 13, serial number 39H-3755. As near as I can date this rod it appears to have been made c. 1976 and fished extremely sparingly. All sections full-length, ferrules fit with silky smoothness and are easily aligned with the present witness marks, reel seat still retains some overvarnish from the wood spacer, with only the slightest grip soiling- that's how little this rod has been fished! In original yellow poplin bag and brass-capped aluminum tube sans label and hang tag, this rod is has a crisp action fitting either a DT5 or 6 line and plenty of backbone. Straight, tight and classic! $2,550

Hardy St. George Jr. : Introduced by Hardy in 1910, the St. George became an immediate classic. This St. George Jr. features a 3-screw spool release, ribbed aluminum foot, duplicated check, smokey agate line guard and RHW, owner's initials engraved on backplate "FJH".
Very smooth and pleasing adustable click, this reel has lost most of its leaded finish, but to my eye, has a wonderful patina evidencing decades of joyous use. Would look and feel oh so sweet on a 3 wt cane rod. Needs a good cleaning, and there is a minute inclusion in the agate. I honestly can not tell if it's a crack or a natural inclusion. I took pics with a macro lens and blew them up, felt it with my finger, etc but can not tell for certain and priced accordingly at $795.
Hardy Lightweight Type 3: First introduced in 1936, the Hardy Lightweight has become a mainstay of the Hardy line. Early versions went thru various styles before the final form was settled, and this is one of the rare early types known as the Type 3.
Unlike the final version, this reel features a solid spool plate, smooth aluminum foot, 4 pillars without line guard, non-adjustable hairspring click check, straight line writing: "The Lightweight" and "Made By Hardy Bros. LTD. England". This one retains a very nice leaded finish, with the usual dings from use, and could use a good cleaning. The drag is very smooth and sweet, though, the spool has very little play, and at just under 3 1/4" in diameter would make a great reel to use for DT4 or 5 line. A nice addition to a Hardy afficianado's collection. $295
Hardy Angel #3/4 Featherweight: 3" in diameter and only 3.9 oz in weight, super high quality futuristic and reversable anodized aluminum large arbor reel with adustable click and pawl drag, silky smooth. Edward von Hofe Model 360 Perfection Size #2: We are extremely pleased to offer this masterpiece of reel design and execution, and unquestionably the most coveted flyreel ever produced. The 360 Celebrated Trout and Black Bass Fly reel was introduced in the late 1890's, and this number #2 was made pre-1908, before serial numbers began to be stamped on the foot. In equisite condition, the backplate retains the faint retailer's stamp of Dame Stoddard, Boston.
Features hard rubber construction, nickel silver safety bands, diminutive arrow-head drag indicator pointer gorgeously knurled drag knob, nickel silver spool sides, on/off click, sliding oil port cover, sepentine handle, along with a leather reel case by Arne Mason, DT4 line and backing. Extremely rare and coveted 2 size, 2 3/4"" in diameter, 1" width I believe these reels deserve a place in any museum of fine design and transcend utilitarianism into the realm of fine art. The only detraction on this reel is oil port cover could use a little 'stick-um' to keep it from moving and a replacment on/off click button made from brass. It functions perfectly, but is not original. $6,200. SOLD!
Orvis Madison Adirondack: 7'6" 2p, 2t. 4 1/8 oz. for 5 line, serial number 90688. Original bag and case, good overall condition w/some grip soiling, A great little fishing rod. $1,195 SOLD!

It features a very wide ranging adjustable spring and pawl drag system, reversable for either L or R-hand wind by simply flipping the check and nickel silver line guard, gorgeous bronze anodized aircraft aluminum construction. The 7 model holds up to a DT 7 line and 100 yards backing, yet weighs only 4.4 oz. Would make a great pairing with a Spey or large trout or steelhead rod at a very affordable price. Mint, unused with only some wear to the box from storage, original paperwork and neoprene bag. $345 SOLD!

Wagner Presentation Series 6'6" 3p 2t for Dt3 line: Custom-made in 2000, this rod is notable as being one of less than a handful of rods we've ever built in blond cane. Features full engraving of D/L nickel silver reel seat hardware and ferrules, light color maple spacer to match cane, diminutive 4 3/4" cigar grip, blond cane with 3x3 node spacing, mirror matched tips; the butt and mid are also mirror matched evidencing great attention to detail; delicate 3-wrap intermediates and guide wraps in light olive, with guide and hook keeper wraps tipped claret, deep forest green wraps at ferrules. Varnish is immaculate, and this rod possesses a delicate and progressive action.
As was the custom at the time, this rod was furnished with a hexagonal wood case, in this instance of cherry that has aged to a gorgeous deep red with contrasting end caps in maple to match rod and reel seat spacer. Rod has been used sparingly and lovingly and is in overall VGC++ condition, with some very minor grip soiling and oxidation of the ferrules and reel seat, two things I can clean up to mint for the buyer gratis. This rod with intermediates and engraving would be quoted today at $3,145. $2,399. REDUCED! OWNER MOTIVATED! $1,999. SOLD!

The cosmetic detailing is quite astounding, and features Rolf's personally hand-textured and patinized ferrules, reel seat hardware, winding check, ferrule plugs and even the tip tops! Rolf borrowed this decorative technique from his experience as a custom pipemaker, and it recalls the rocky stream bottoms we ply in pursuit of our sport, a very organic visual feel. Rod is as new, the only sign of use is two very light lines on the reel seat spacer evidencing mounting of a reel. Original labeled bag and case. Given the incredible attention to detail and very light use, this rod is a steal at $1,195 SOLD!

R.W. Summers Rod Co, Traverse City, MI USA" with Western grip terminating in wire-wound hook keeper, with elegantly penned identifying info above in flowing script, tips wrapped to distinguish between each with black tipping at tip top on one, red on another. Correct labeled bag, case with labeled brass cap with tiny vent hole, correct and original aluminum and cork ferrule plug thoughtfully attached to the hang tag on the sack.
From Michigan rodmaking legend Bob Summers, this magnificent 7'3" 4-5 wt. is- like all of his rods I've had the pleasure to cast- a casting dream. Possesses equal facility with either a DT4 or DT5 line, those with a faster stroke will love it with a 4, but a more patient caster with a slower stroke will be amply rewarded by a trying a 5. I've often advised people new to collecting and fishing cane that the ownership of a Summer's rod is imperative, such is the quality, integrity and desirability of his work- a career dating back to 1956.
This rod was reportedly made in the 90's, and has had two owners, both gentleman who have reported to have cast it but never fished it. In outstanding condition, I'll take them at their word. Condition is excellent, cork has only the most minute soiling, ferrules seat easily, tell-tale minute cracking at the ferrule tabs indicates it has certainly has been lawn cast, and it's a pity and shame it hasn't been used to it's fullest potential on the water. A new owner can rectify that and enjoy a superlative experience as well as a the pride of ownership of a must-have for any serious rod collector. $2,850. Sold!
